PHILIP M HOLLAND
Phil Holland began his 34-year career in ASW and Mine Warfare at Marconi Space & Defence where he worked on torpedo homing sonar and decoy countermeasures. He later joined Plessey Marine Research Unit to work on what was then the world's largest digital sonar beamformer. This joint US/UK research programme developed a unique ‘bottom bounce' sonar to investigate long-range active transmissions.
After a period working on towed array sonars he became Technical Manager for the sonar for the new UK SSBN HMS Vanguard. In this role he was responsible for the system architecture design and specification of the complete sonar suite.
He then became Technical Executive for Plessey Naval Systems (now Thales Underwater Systems) responsible for all engineering and technology development in the field of sonar systems, including the self-funded research and development budget.
In 1991 he joined a joint US/UK team working on Surface Ship Torpedo Defence. He was responsible as Technical Director and Deputy Program Manager for a mixed team of engineers from GE Aerospace (later Lockheed Martin) and Marconi Underwater Systems for the systems design and performance of the sensors and countermeasures systems.
He was subsequently Project Manager for the UK's 2087 Low Frequency Active Sonar. He successfully led an international team from GEC Marconi, Ferranti and Thomson Sintra, France to win the Feasibility Study and Project Definition Study contracts. This system is now in full development and production.
After a period working on special projects for submarine programmes he took the post of Technical Director for Mine Warfare in TUS. In this role he was responsible for all engineering and technology development in mine warfare including AUV SAS development and Sea Guardian Swimmer Detection Sonar as well as wideband sonar developments for the French and Royal Navies. Phil is now the Sales & Marketing Director of Wavefront Systems Ltd. As well as his company marketing role, he provides marketing and management consultancy to clients, and has assisted clients with major bids.
